About Us

Trevails of Truro has been run by the same family for four generations. Founded in 1919 by Royston John Trevail, the business is a Cornwall institution and known throughout the county and further afield for quality and service. The present store, some 5,000 square feet, is just 50 meters from the original shop in River Street. In addition to a large range of menswear, Trevails also sells lingerie, womenswear and accessories.
A short history of a gentlemens outfitters...
1919: Trevails is founded
Royston John Trevail returns from serving in the First World War in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, and stakes his future on the opening of a Gentlemens Outfitters on River Street in the city of Truro. He runs a country round on a converted motorcycle, delivering clothes throughout Cornwall.
1946: An addition to the sign
Royston's son Geoffrey serves throughout the Second World War, in the DCLI like his father. On his return in 1946 he finds that "and son" had been added to the shop facia. At this time Mr Trevail senior dies suddenly and it is largely left to Geoffrey to build on the reputation for friendly service. He takes over in 1953 when Royston dies.
1958: A second shop
Geoffrey Trevail buys 31 River Street to open a boys and schoolwear shop. With his wife Joan, he embarks on an ambitious modernisation and expansion of the business. In the late 60s he is joined by his only son Nicholas.
1970: A family affair
Throughout the 60s and 70s Geoffrey and son Nicholas run the store while Joan expands the womenswear offering. In the late 90s Trevails gets an embroidery department. Soon Nicholas is fitting male voice choirs, rugby teams and yacht crews with embroidered blazers, shirts, and Tshirts.
2000: A thriving family business
Royston's great grandson Olly takes over as buyer and manager for Trevails in 2009, while Nicholas continues to run the business.
Today: Celebrating 100 years
The emphasis on quality, style, and personal service is the same as it always was, and Olly, Nick and their fantastic team are celebrating the centenary of this very special family business.
"An amazing selection of smart, eye catching clothes and super service, so friendly and helpful"
Cornwall's largest independent clothing store
Cornwall has a long history of independent shops, especially in the cathedral city of Truro.
But the rise of multi-nationals and out of town shopping has seen a decline in family run stores.
Trevails is proud to be thriving in the modern high street, proving that personal service and great brands never go out of fashion
